Is there a way to avoid getting a marriage license but still have your marriage valid?

My fiance and I are Christians and want to have God as the authority over our marriage, not the government. If God brought us together, and the Holy Bible says "what God therefore hath brought together, let no man asunder" then why do we need the governments permission to be married? Is there any way to avoid getting a marriage license? I have heard of the banns of marriage being said in place of getting a license, or having certain things read during the ceremony to make it valid... We live in Canada
