Why does Paul The Apostle make this argument?

I believe the Holy Spirit is teaching us here that the "old" nature is still within us, and in that we serve the law of the flesh, ie, sin. But in the spirit, which is now redeemed and justified through faith, we serve the Spirit of God. Both are true in the saint on earth. This is a warning and a comfort all at once.
